A brief look at PE...

SPRING TERM 2! Dance CPD for Teachers! For the second half of the Spring Term, the Junior classes have been visited by PE specialist Mr Irish. The Sports Premium Funding has enabled the school to employ Mr Irish to work alongside the teachers, supporting them in their delivery of Curriculum Dance. The children have enjoyed the provision offered and the teachers now have increased subject knowledge that will support them in the delivering of future lessons.

11/03/24 3rd Place Finish For Tag Rugby Team In Area Tournament! Yesterday evening a team of 5 girls and 4 boys from St Joseph's travelled all the way to Brymore Academy in Cannington to compete in this years Sedgemoor Area Tag Rugby Tournament. With very little experience of playing this game other than a 45 minute crash course delivered by Mr Fisher the week before, the team performed amazingly well! Their performances got better and better with every game and by the end of the competition we were holding our own with the very best schools at the event. With 12 teams taking part, a third place finish is just remarkable and credit has to go to every one of the children who took part in the competition. Your ability to adapt to playing a new sport was just fantastic to watch and I'm sure that if we attend future events, you will continue to impress. WELL DONE EVERYONE!!

28/02/24 Magnificent 3rd Place For Year 3/4 Gymnasts! A huge congratulations to our Year 3/4 Gymnasts who travelled all the way to Bridgewater to compete in the Sedgemoor Area Gymnastics Finals yesterday. Competing against 9 other schools from the surrounding area, the squad had to perform a routine and were score both individually and as part of a team. The competition was extremely strong and a 3rd place finish for the team is just remarkable with Evelyn taking an individual bronze medal as well. Great job!

20/02/24 Year 5/6 Boys Conquer All In Final Tournament Of The Season! A brilliant display of footballing skills saw our Year 5/6 Boys win the final football tournament of the season held at King Alfred's school this afternoon. The boys were absolutely amazing, fending off competition from Eastover, Kingsmoor, Berrow, St Andrew's and Churchfield without losing a game and without conceding a goal! A truly remarkable performance from the whole team. Well done everyone!

08/02/24 Year 5/6 Boys Finish 2nd in Futsal Tournament! A huge well done to the Year 5/6 Boys Football Team who travelled all the way to Haygrove School in Bridgwater to compete in a Futsal Tournament today. A brilliant performance all round and with two wins, a draw and just the one loss you gained a very well deserved 2nd place in the competition.

07/02/24 GLORIOUS 2ND PLACE IN SEDGEMOOR AREA CROSS COUNTRY!

Well I just don't know what to say other than a huge well done to all the children who have participated in any of the Sedgemoor cross country races this year. With a magnificent turn out of over 55 junior children in the latest race held at King Alfred's, the team have moved up another position in the league standing and finish the series in a magnificent 2nd place! A brilliant performance once again from everyone. The data for the last race of the season and final league standing can be seen below and there will undoubtedly be a number of our children who will be selected to represent the Sedgemoor Area in the County Finals next moth so watch this space!

07/02/24 Year 2 Gymnasts Finish Runners Up In Area Competition! A brilliant performance from our Year 2 Gymnasts this morning saw them finish the Key Steps Area Competition with a team silver medal! Performing a routine that has been practiced in Curriculum PE as well as in our after school club, the children were faultless under pressure as they performed in front of a judge and were scored accordingly. There were six schools competing (60 children in total) and the St Joseph's squad finished a remarkable second place! A special mention has to go to Alice, who also picked up a bronze medal as the third highest individual score of the day! GO TEAM ST JOSEPH'S!!!!

PE - Year 2 Gymnastic Club. Good numbers and with a few off sick as well!

30/01/24 A brilliant effort from our Year 3 footballers (5 boys and 3 girls) who participated in a 16 strong area tournament. The team played some magnificent football with smiles on their faces and lost just the one game 1-0! The future look bright for both the boys and girls teams over the next few years.

25/01/24 Sports Hall Athletics Team Finish 3rd In County Finals! A brilliant morning of competition saw 23 St Joseph's children take the bronze medal in the Sports Hall Athletics County Finals. The team were superb and couldn't have tried any harder with a flawless performance throughout the event. Out of the 12 relay races in our group, we won 10 of them and finished 2nd in just the two.........just outstanding!! A huge well done to everyone in the team. The spirit and comradery on display throughout the competition was just amazing and I was very proud to be associated with St Joseph's. WEL DONE!

19/01/24 Mavellous Girls Compete At County Football Finals. Today 10 of our footballing girls braved the elements and travelled to Strode College in Street to compete in the ESFA County Finals. The competition was fierce with the best schools from across the County coming together for the competition and I'm happy to say that the girls from St Joseph's didn't let us down! Playing 5 extremely competitive games, the girls ended the day with wins, draws and loses. Not quite enough to progress to the semi-finals, but a fantastic experience for all concerned and some remarkable football played by everyone in the team. Fantastic work girls, I felt very honoured to be your coach for the day!

17/01/24 Boys Perform Brilliantly at ESFA County Finals. A huge well done to the 10 boys who represented the Sedgemoor Area (and St Joseph's school) at the ESFA large schools County Finals held at Strode College today. St Joseph's just sneaks into the large schools category for this event which means that we have to compete against schools that are over 3 times the size of us! The boys were ultra competitive throughout the afternoon and played some remarkable football. Although the team didn't make it out of the group phase, they finished the day with 2 draws, 2 loses and a win in extremely cold playing conditions which is just amazing! Well done boys, I hope you enjoyed the experience and I look forward to watching you in action in the next competition.

11/01/24 Year 3/4 Sports Hall Athletics Team Finish Runners Up In Sedgemoor Finals! WOW WOW WOW!! Today I had the pleasure of watching our Year 3/4 Sports Hall Athletics Team run, jump and throw their way to a silver medal in the Year 3/4 Sedgemoor Sports Hall Athletics Finals!! I was lucky enough to witness a truly brilliant display of passion and determination, coupled with a great sense of comradery and team spirit between the 20 children who took part. Out of 13 participating schools we finished a magnificent second, which considering the size of our school compared to the other schools we were competing against is quite amazing! Well done everyone!

13/12/23 and 14/12/23 Christmas Cross Country and St Joseph's move up to third!

With all the festive fun taking place around the school, it was great to see 23 St Joseph children representing the school in the second area cross country race of the year.

There was some fantastic running from everyone who raced and we even saw Freya winning the Year 3 Girls race and Isaac winning the Year 5 Boys race, a remarkable achievement from both of these children considering the level of competition on show!

As always, all the children who compete earn points for the school and I'm happy to say that we have moved up to third position in the league standings out of the 20 schools taking part - GREAT WORK FROM ALL THE CHILDREN WHO RACED AND HELPED TO MOVE OUR SCHOOL UP A POSITION IN THE LEAGUE TABLE!

With the last race of the year taking part at The King Alfred School, I'll keep my fingers crossed for another strong effort!

07/12/23 Year 2 Athletics Festival Fun! The whole cohort of Year 2 children had a brilliant morning of athletics fun today as they participated in a huge Key Stage 1 Festival! Picked up at 9.15am, a coach transported the class all the way to Bridgwater College where the children were met by Mr Irish and a number of Bridgwater College students. A Number of exciting activities had been prepared by the students in the Sports Hall, including a series of inter school relay races to round off a busy morning of athletics fun! All the children were smiling throughout the event and I'm sure will sleep really well this evening after exerting so much energy in each of the activities.

30/11/23 Girls Football Team Conquer All! Well I don't really know what to say other than an enormous well done to our Girls Football Team who travelled all the way to Bridgwater College today to play football in a Sedgemoor Area Tournament. The conditions today were absolutely freezing, but that didn't stop our girls from emerging from the competition as overall winners! In total the team played 8 games against a selection of other schools from around the Sedgemoor area. We finished the competition with 7 wins and a draw, scoring 25 goals and conceding just the 2! A remarkable performance from all the girls concerned and one which will earn them a place in the County Finals being held in January. Just brilliant!!

14/11/23 Year 5/6 Boys Reach ESFA County Finals! A brilliant display of footballing talent saw our Year 5/6 Boys reach the ESFA County Finals last week. The boys travelled all the way to Bridgwater where the played a whole morning of football against the best other schools from around the area and I'm happy to say finished the tournament unbeaten! They will now represent the Sedgemoor Area in the prestigious County Finals which will be held in the New Year!

21/11/23 Year 3/4 Boys Football Team Finish 2nd! Congratulations to our Year 3/4 Boys Football that finished a magnificent 2nd in last weeks Area Football Tournament. The boys played some superb football, losing just the one game and finishing second place in their round of matches. I look forward to watching the team play again in their next competition.

16/11/23 St Joseph's Crowned Sedgemoor Area Sports Hall Athletics Champions - A magnificent well done to all 21 girls and boys who represented the school today in the Sedgemoor Area Sports Hall Athletics Finals held at Bridgwater College. After a busy morning of competition, I am pleased to say that the the St Joseph's team ran, jumped and threw their way to a tremendous victory. Fending off strong competition from all over the area, I was lucky enough to witness a truly brilliant display from everyone who took part!! This result will hopefully take us on to the next stage of the competition and a place in the County Finals at the beginning of next year . . . . watch this space!

07/11/23 - 2nd and 3rd Place for Footballing Girls - Today, both of our Girls football teams played in a Sedgemoor Area Schools competition. Both teams of girls were split into two separate pools against six other schools from around the area and they ALL performed remarkably well. After all of the pool matches had been played, one of our teams finished with two wins and a loss, with the other team remaining unbeaten with two wins and a draw. We ended up with one team in the 3rd/4th place final which I'm happy to say they won and finished a magnificent 3rd place! This left our other team of girls contesting the overall competition final! A amazing battling display saw a final score of 0-0 and meant they ended the competition with a nerve racking penalty shoot out! Unfortunately, someone has to lose in a final and although the girls took some brilliant penalties and Amelia made a great save, they were just piped by Hamp Academy. A TRUELY BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE FROM ALL THE GIRLS - WELL DONE!

19/10/23 Cross country super stars at it again!

With the races condensed into one afternoon due to some fairly awful weather, a slightly depleted number of children decided to brave the elements and compete for the school in the first cross country of the 2023-24 season!

The children of St Joseph's never cease to amaze me and once again there were 27 fantastic performances with points accumulating from EVERYONE that raced! We are currently sitting in 4th place out of 16 schools (Brilliant effort).

There were too many racers for me to mention everyone who attended the event but a special mention must go out to Ethan in Year 5 with a gutsy 14th position in an incredibly strong field and to Ciara (also in Year 5) who battled all the way to the end and earned some well deserved points for the school.

There were of course a number of other amazing results, including top ten finishes for Rowan, Freya, Lilah in Year 3, Molly, Emma, Ava and Oscar in Year 4, Emily in Year 5 and finally Harry and Jolie in Year 6!

WELL DONE EVERYONE and I look forward to watching you all race again on Wednesday 13th November (Years 3 and 5) and Thursday 14th December (Years 4and 6) at Bridgwater College Academy.

20/10/23 Battling Boys Perform Brilliantly In Area Football Tournament - t was a pleasure to watch both our boys football teams put in a battling display as they competed in the Sedgemoor Area competition. With a huge amount of determination on show there were wins, losses and draws for both teams! All the games were remarkably close and the boys should feel very proud of the effort and energy that went into each match. One of our teams finished the competition in 3rd place with the second team hot on their heals and just behind in the overall standings! Well done boys and I look forward to seeing you in action again in a few weeks time!

03/10/23 Girls Futsal Team Crowned Sedgemoor Area Champions! This evening I had the pleasure of accompanying and managing a squad of 8 St Joseph girls at the Sedgemoor Area Futsal tournament. Pitted against ten other school from the around the region, our girls were truly amazing! The teams were split into two pools of five with the winning team in each pool making their way to the final. Our girls started their journey with a confident 4-0 win against Otterhampton and followed that with another convincing 5-0 win against BCA. Further wins against St Mary's (3-1) where we showed real resilience to come from behind and a final group stage win against St John and St Francis (1-0) meant that the girls made their way into the final! Playing an extremely competitive final match against last year's champions St Joseph's from Bridgwater, I'm pleased to say that the Burnham-on-Sea squad emerged victorious thanks to a last second winner! WELL DONE GIRLS, YOU WERE ALL JUST BRILLIANT!!

27/09/23 Great Numbers Attend First After School Football Session - There was a huge turn out at after school football this week from both the boys and girls of St Joseph's. On Monday night there were 23 girls attending the club and Wednesday evening saw 39 boys at the session. The weather has been really kind to us since we returned from the holidays so with any luck the numbers will continue to be high as the season progresses.

21/09/23 This term the Junior teachers are receiving a block of Sports Hall Athletics Training delivered by John Irish who is local PE specialist. The training will hopefully help to build teaching confidence in the subject area and is a great use of the Sports Premium Funding we receive from the Government.

A quick look at data linked to after school sporting provision and inter-school competition this year 2022-23

10/07/23 Fabulous 6th in Sedgemoor Area Sports! Today, a team of 20 children from St Joseph's travelled all the way to Brymore Academy in Cannington to compete in this years Sedgemoor Schools Area Sports! With around 200 children congregating on the Brymore sports fields, the standard of competition was immense! Each of the children had to compete in a 400m, a 75m sprint, a standing long jump and a vortex howler throw against nine other children from the other schools taking parts. If you finished in the top four you were rewarded with a certificate and earned points for your school! Every single child from St Joseph's finished in a top four position in at least one of their events and many of the team had multiple top four finishes! The competition ended with relays and a presentation in a nearby marquee. With a 6th place finish, the children of St Joseph's should be very proud of themselves. Many of the schools competing today are at least double the size of our tiny school and well over half of the St Joseph's team were from Year 4 or 5 and will be eligible to race again next year! A great all round performance from everyone and I look forward to next year's competition.

30/06/23 Sports Day 2023 (PM) - Despite needing to postpone the morning flat races and relay races due to rain and a greasy running track, we were fortunate enough to make it out onto the field after lunch for the afternoon activities. The children had great fun exerting themselves and burning off lots of that stored up energy from a morning spent in the classrooms!

20/06/23 Cricketers Finish 3rd in County Finals! A magnificent performance today from our Cricket team saw them place 3rd in the County Cricket Finals held at Wembdon Cricket Club in Bridgwater. Representing the Sedgemoor Area, this team of 8 batted, bowled and fielded their way to a County bronze medal! In total, the team played 5 games against the best representatives from Somerset and North Somerset! They finished the day with three wins and two very narrow loses in what turned out to be a very close competition. There were many highlights and some of the cricket on display was just brilliant! However, there was a magical incident that caught my eye in our penultimate game which highlights the empathetic nature and true spirit we look to endorse here at St Joseph's. An opposition player had been hit and hurt by the ball while batting and was 'out' and quite clearly distressed and in discomfort. The whole St Joseph's team were generally concerned and raced over to check that he was alright and proceeded to ask the umpire to disregard the wicket and replay the ball again.....that moment made me the proudest teacher in Somerset! The team deserved that bronze medal, but in my eyes they will always be winners, especially if they maintain such a positive approach to sport.

16/06/23 Key Stage 1 Sports Fun! Today 70 children from Key Stage 1 had great fun at a Sports Festival at St Joseph's School in Bridgwater. The children were grouped into teams, mixing with other children from the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust. They participated in a carousel of fun sporting activities!

15/06/23 Wimbledon Watch Out!! What a glorious way to spend a Thursday afternoon! Today 20 boys and girls from Year 3 and Year 4 travelled down the road to 'The Avenue Tennis Club' to take part in a local area tennis tournament. The children have been attending Mr Fisher's after school club for the last 3 or 4 weeks and this was an ideal opportunity to put into practice all that they had leant as they competed against other schools in the Sedgemoor area. The children had a brilliant time in extremely hot conditions and the standard of tennis being played seemed to get better and better with every game! Each team was made up of four children (two boys/two girls) and everyone played a series of matches against children from other schools. Points were added up and out of the two pools of schools, the top two teams contested the final. I'm pleased to say that one of the St Joseph's teams were in the final and won 3-1 against some strong opposition from neighboring St Andrew's. Overall this was a fantastic experience for all the children and it was a great opportunity to experience tennis in a club environment. The organisation of the event by Head Coach Tim Seymour was just great and it was very kind of him to deliver ice creams to all the children participating half way through the afternoon! Like I said at the start of this article, it was a glorious way to spend a Thursday afternoon!

09/06/23 SEND Festival at St Joseph's in Bridgwater. Today a group of children from St Joseph's travelled all the way to Bridgwater to participate in an exciting sports festival! The children had great fun completing a carousel of activities including archery, an obstacle course, beat the goalie, throwing and parachute fun!

25/05/23 Cricketing superstars in the making! Today a team of 8 St Joseph boys travelled to Wembdon Cricket Club in Bridgwater to compete in the 2023 area competition. The boys played some remarkable cricket throughout the afternoon with some superb batting, bowling and fielding on display! There was a real buzz of excitement in every game and the team spirit and effort was just great to watch. This group of children were just amazing at supporting and encouraging each other, especially when mistakes were made. They were respectful of the other teams they were playing, cheering and shaking hands at the ends of games even when they had lost! It was a pleasure to spend time umpiring and scoring such a wonderful group of boys. We finished the competition with three wins and two very narrow loses which is just magnificent!

03/05/23 Good Luck To All Our County Cross Country Runners - GOOD LUCK to the 11 children from St Joseph's who have been selected to represent the Area of Sedgemoor in the County Cross Country Finals being held in Yeovil on Wednesday 3rd May. It's a great opportunity to races against some of the best runners in the County and we look forward to hearing about how you all get on.

27/04/23 Swimmers Finish 4th In Close Competition! This week a team of 18 swimmers from St Joseph's travelled all the way to Bridgwater to compete in a swimming gala against 6 other schools from around the area. The competition was extremely fierce and St Joseph's were competitive in every single event! With the scores being announced at he end of the competition, there was just 12 point separating our 4th place position with the the first placed winning score! Credit has to go to the magnificent swimmers from St Joseph's who displayed a superb team spirit throughout the afternoon! You were just brilliant!

20/04/23 Area Cross Country Runners Up! St Joseph's children were presented with their silver runners up medals for cross country as the school finished 2nd in the Sedgemoor Cross Country League! The competition has been fierce throughout the year and a last big effort on home soil (King Alfred's) saw the team move from 4th place up to 2nd! In total 67 juniors participated in at least one of the three races with many racing in all three. This a a huge team effort with everyone who runs earning points for the school and you can see how close it was in the end. WELL DONE EVERYONE!! Final standings in the league can be seen below:

20/04/23 Gymnastic Performances Rewarded With Medals! Since we returned from the Christmas break, a gymnastic opportunity has been offered to all children from Year 2-6 through either an after school club or in a small group working alongside a gymnastic specialist. All the children who participated ended the sessions with a final intra school competition against one another! In recognition of all their hard work attending the club, as well as having the confidence to compete in front of an audience, the children were rewarded with a shiny, gold medal! In total 73 pupils participated in this brilliant experience and should be very proud of their achievements with may of them being selected to compete against other schools in the Sedgemoor Area Competition.

19/04/23 Year 5/6 Gymnasts Triumph In Sedgemoor Area Finals - I was lucky enough to witness another superb display of talent from out Year 5 and 6 gymnasts as they were victorious in today's area competition held at St Joseph's in Bridgwater. The twelve strong team were absolutely brilliant performing a very complex routine in front of a judge and a rather large audience. The whole team held their nerve under immense pressure and with an accumulated team score were crowned Sedgemoor Area Champions 2023! GREAT JOB TEAM!!

24/03/23 ST JOSEPH'S FINISH RUNNERS UP IN SPORTS HALL ATHLETICS COUNTY FINALS! A TRULY AMZING PERFORMANCE FROM THE 24 STRONG ST JOSEPH'S SPORTS HALL ATHLETICS TEAMS WHO RAN, THREW AND JUMPED THEIR WAY TO A SILVER MEDAL IN THE COUNTY FINALS HELD AT RICHARD HUISH COLLEGE IN TAUNTON THIS MORNING. IT WAS GREAT TO SEE SUCH PASSION, DERTERMINATION AND TALENT ON SHOW AND YOU SHOULD BE EXTREMELY PROUD OF YOURSELVES!!!!!!

March 2023 Intra School Competition for Year 5 and Year 6 Gymnasts. Over the past few weeks, 36 children from Year 5 and 6 children have been attending a school Gymnastics club run by Mrs Bax (Gymnastics specialist). The children have been competing against each other in groups of 12 in an effort to make a small squad of 8 that will represent the school in the Area Championships. The children have been vaulting and learning a Key Steps routine where they were judged on their performance. The gymnastics on display was excellent but most importantly, the children had great fun! WELL DONE ALL OF YOU!

22/03/23 Gymnasts Medal In Area Finals - It was an absolute pleasure to spend the day with our Year 2 and Year 3-4 teams of gymnasts who competed today in the Sedgemoor Area Finals held at St Joseph's School in Bridgwater. The team had been selected after an intra school competition a few weeks ago. The event always attracts a large number of schools and this year was no different. There were in excess of 60 children from around the area competing in each competition and once again the children of St Joseph's did not disappoint. The Year 3-4 team finished in a magnificent 2nd position with Issabella adding to her team medal with an individual bronze! The Year 2 team were also amazing capturing a team bronze medal which is incredible considering this is their first inter school opportunity!! I was amazed by the quality of gymnastics on display and also at how well the children coped with the pressure of performing in front of a large audience. A TRULEY BRILLIANT EFFORT FROM ALL OF YOU AND I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR'S AFTER SCHOOL CLUB AND COMPETITION.

16/03/23 Year 5 Children Blossom In Tag Rugby Tournament. Braving the wind and rain , a group of ten Year 5 children travelled all the way to North Petherton Rugby Club to compete in a local Tag Rugby Festival. With very little experience of the sport and playing against some teams who live and breathe rugby the children performed brilliantly and undoubtedly grew in confidence and expertise as the competition progressed. It was great to hear about such passion, determination and resilience on display throughout the afternoon. Well done all of you, you should be very proud of yourselves.

03/03/23 Year 3/4 After school Gymnasts Compete In Competition - Since returning from the Christmas break, a group of 20 Year 3 and 4 children have been attending an after school Gymnastics club run by Mr Fisher. To mark the end of the club, Mel Bax, a Gymnastic specialist has run a competition based around the Key Steps routine and spring board vault that the children have been learning. Pictured below are the children who have been attending the Club and competed brilliantly in the competition. WELL DONE ALL OF YOU!

24/02/23 Year 2 After School Gymnasts Compete in Competition - Since returning from the Christmas break, a group of 21 Year 2 children have been attending an after school Gymnastics club run by Mr Fisher. To mark the end of the club, Mel Bax, a Gymnastic specialist has run a competition based around the Key Steps routine and vault that the children have been learning. Pictured below are the children who have been attending the Club and competed brilliantly in the competition. WELL DONE EVERYONE!

09/02/23 Year 4 Boys Triumph In Area Football Tournament - An enormous well done to the Year 4 boys football team who were just truly magnificent in today's tournament held at Haygrove school in Bridgwater. Playing against 9 other school teams from around the area (Eastover, Somerset Bridge, Churchfield, Kingmoor, St Mary's, St John and St Francis, Enmore and St Joseph's in Bridgwater) the boys ran out overall winners scoring 23 goals and not conceding any!!!! A 3-0 victory against local rivals Churchfield in the final ensured they were crowned champions. A FANTASIC FOOTBALLING DISPLAY THAT YOU SHOULD ALL BE VERY PROUD OF!

07/02/23 St Joseph's Year 3/4 Sports Hall Athletics Team Conquer All!! Well, I don't really know what to say! This was an absolutely outstanding performance from the 12 girls and 11 boys from Years 3 and 4 who represented the school today in the Year 3/4 Sports Hall Athletics Area Finals. Pitted against a large number schools from the surrounding area (Enmore, Kingsmoor, St John and St Francis, Somerset Bridge, St Joseph's Bridgwater to name but a few) the St Joseph's children ran, jumped and threw their way to an amazing victory! WHAT A BRILLIANT TEAM EFFORT FROM EVERYONE CONCERNED .........You all worked so hard and should be very proud of yourselves. CONGRATULATIONS ON A WELL DESERVED VICTORY!!!!!!!

30/01/23 Cross Country Runners Shine Again!

A huge well done to the 20+ girls and boys who represented St Joseph's in the latest cross country held at King Alfred's. We had some amazing performances from all of our Year 3 and Year 5 representatives in once again rather cold and testing conditions! The overall competition is very close and the St Joseph's children have undoubtedly bridged the gap between themselves and the first place team! With one more set of races to go for our Year 4 and Year 6 children, it's all to play for! School results are below:

26/01/23 Futsal Wizards!!

Two teams of Year 4 and 5 boys represented the school this afternoon in a huge Futsal tournament held at Haygrove School in Bridgwater.

The tournament itself attracted 16 teams from all over the area, so as you can imagine, competition was extremely fierce!

There were four pools which meant that each team got to play three group stage matches and a final, dependent on their finishing position in the pool.

Both teams of boys played incredibly well with passion and determination and I was fortunate enough to observe some of the best football I have seen in a very long time!

Our school is considerably smaller than most of the opposition on show which highlights the strength in depth that we have here at St Joseph's.

One of the teams finished with two wins and two loses (amazing), with the other team finishing the competition with two draws and two wins! They didn't concede a goal and even beat the winners of the overall competition in the process!

Well done boys, this was an unbelievable effort and you should be very proud of yourselves!!

12/01/23 - This afternoon, both myself and Mr Franklin had the pleasure of accompanying two teams of footballers from St Joseph's to a local area tournament being held at The King Alfred School, Burnham.

The competition drew in schools from the surrounding area and there were  representatives from Churchfield, Bridgwater College Academy (BCA), Westover Green, St Mary's, St John and St Francis and Somerset Bridge.

The boys were amazing putting on a determined and spirited effort in every game and at the same time playing some brilliant football! One of our teams even ended finishing the competition unbeaten!

What makes these performances even more remarkable is that out of the 17 boys that participated, only one of them was in Year 6 meaning that the future of football looks really rosy at St Joseph's!! WELL DONE LADS.

13/12/22 &14/12/22 - The ice and freezing temperatures didn't seem to stop 18 brave children from Joseph's competing in this week's cross country race! With arctic conditions across the county, the children were yet again amazing  as they ventured out onto a freezing Brymore course! It's never easy to run such a distance, but with the cold to contend with as well, the children should be extremely proud of their achievements.

Great effort everyone!! The stats are below and with one more race to go (King Alfred's) it's very close in the league standings:

17/11/22 - A huge congratulations to the 9 boys and 9 girls from St Joseph's who competed today in the Sports Hall Athletics Area Finals held at Bridgwater College. Each of the children had to compete in two track relay events and two field events (standing long jump, standing triple jump, vertical jump, speed bounce, chest push and javelin). As you can imagine, assigning each child their best event was logistically challenging and to make matters even more difficult, there were unfortunately 5 absentees due to illness! But this is a wonderful group of children at St Joseph's and even with a number of changes to events and new children being drafted in at the last minute, the team fought off competition from seven other schools and finished in a remarkable 3rd place, taking the bronze medal and only 2 points away from silver!! A TRULY MAGNIFICENT EFFORT TEAM - WELL DONE!!

03/11/22 - Today a squad of 18 St Joseph girls travelled all the way to Bridgwater College to compete in the ESFA Regional competition. The St Joseph's squad of 18 were split into two equally sized teams of 9 and were pitted against representations from 14 other schools from around the area. There were four pools and the winners of each pool progressed to the semi finals and then possibly the final! Both our St Joseph's teams were just amazing with many of the girls a year or two under age and playing against much older children! After some tough competition one of our teams finished an incredible second place in their pool with the other team managing to secure victory and move to a place in the semi finals! There were some great wins against Eastover, Willowdown, Otterhampton as well as draws against BCA and a second Eastover team! In the semi final the girls put up a spirited display losing to an extremely strong St Joseph's team from Bridgwater who went on to win the overall competition! This meant a third place play off for our girls who secured a 0-0 draw against North Petherton leaving us with a third place medal overall! Highlights of the day have to be seeing the girls play with such spirit, passion and determination. There was also a rather impressive hat trick from Emily in one of the games as well as some brilliant saves from both Daisy and Amelia. Unfortunately there are too many individual triumphs for me to write about; there was some great goal scoring on display, some magnificent passing between players and some brave tacking! AMAZING EFFORT GIRLS - I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL OUR NEXT COMPETITION!!!!!!

18/10/22 & 19/10/22 - Well, what a brilliant end to the Half Term! On Tuesday and Wednesday this week a team of 47 junior children from St Joseph's travelled all the way to Brymore School in Cannington to compete in the first of three cross country races held throughout the Autumn term.

With girls and boys racing separately in a total of 8 races, St Joseph's was extremely well represented in every Year group. The participation statistics for the event are documented below, but numbers succeeded pre-pandemic participation which is testament to the commitment of the children in the Sedgemoor area.

Total Athletes: 395

Number of Girl Athletes: 183

Number of Boy Athletes: 212

Total Schools Entered:  17

From a scoring point of view, every child that runs earns points for the school total so it's a real team effort! There are of course individual winners in each of the races and we were fortunate enough to take a silver medal in the Year 5 Boys race and a bronze medal in the Year 5 Girls race. Having said that, the real recognition must go towards all the children as a collective and in particular those that might not necessarily finish high up the field but nevertheless earn valuable points for TEAM ST JOSEPH'S who I am happy to say are currently sitting in a MARVELLOUS 2ND POSITION out of the 17 participating schools!! WHAT AN AMAZING EFFORT FROM ALL OF YOU and I can't wait until our second race of the season which will take place later in the term. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!!!!!!

03/10/22 - A huge well done to the 9 boys who travelled all the way to Bridgwater College to represent the school in an ESFA Area Tournament. Pitted against some very strong competition from a number of schools well over double the size of ours, the boys performed remarkably well and played with real passion, grit and determination! All of the games were extremely close and could have gone either way! There were some very narrow loses against St Mary's (who went on to win the overall competition), North Petherton (2-1), Somerset Bridge (1-0) but the highlight of the afternoon had to be a last second goal to seal victory against Berrow (2-1)! Great performance boys, the school is extremely proud of your achievements and with many of the team still in Year 4 and 5, the future looks rosy!!
