Autumn

Quality time with our reception buddies

Maths - Today we were adding and subtracting fractions, finding a common denominator, and simplifying our answers.

Science - We compared and gave reasons for variations in how components function, including the brightness of bulbs and the volume of buzzers, and the on / off position of switches. Before we started, we made predictions on how the independent variables would impact the brightness of the bulb, and had a lot of fun independently exploring these and discovering the results!

Music - We had lots of fun playing the glockenspiel to ‘It’s All About Love’, a cheerful and positive song, which is what we needed after a day of hard work!

RE - We created our own symbols for the Virtue of Charity.

World Mental Health Day - Today we wore lots of yellow to celebrate World Mental Health Day! We created a feelings first aid kit, where we explored what objects, people, places and words make us feel happy and regulated. We’ll continue to look after our mental health as we work through a busy and challenging year!

Spellings - We used dictionaries to look up the definitions of a range of homophones, to help us learn their spellings and to know when to use them correctly.

Maths - Working hard on simplifying fractions and finding equivalent fractions!

Our finished fact files, all about Black British History, to celebrate Black History Month.

History - We paused our current history learning to learn about the importance of Black History Month. We conducted independent research on notable Black British figures in history, such as Mary Seacole, Walter Tull and Mary Prince. We approached this with respect and curiosity, and reflected on the crucial roles they played when tackling racism.

Today we took part in the National Literacy Trust Take 10 to read to boost mental health campaign, in conjunction with World Mental Health Day! We joined Ramzee, a comic book and Marvel illustrator, live on Zoom, and created some amazing illustrations of our own!

French - Today we explored the names of different places around town. We then labelled our own map, using the correct names.

Maths - Today we tackled long division with remainders! A very tricky lesson, but Year 6 approached it with fantastic effort and resilience, and did brilliantly. Great work!

Computing - We really enjoyed learning how to code today, as we learnt how to create a song, putting together background music, a beat, singers and instruments!

Science - We explored how the brightness of a bulb is associated with the number and voltage of cells used in the circuit.

Art - The children decided what they wanted their photo composition to be. They copied their line drawing onto their background using homemade carbon paper.

NSPCC - Today we welcomed in a volunteer from the NSPCC, who delivered a very helpful and informative workshop. We looked at a range of scenarios, had some brilliant discussions, and listened carefully.

This afternoon, the Year 6 children read some picture books to their buddies, in the sunshine! They were absolutely brilliant role models - they were kind, caring and gentle, and they all made me incredibly proud. A great end to the week!

NSPCC virtual assembly, teaching us how to recognise different types of abuse, how to cope with our worries, and who to tell.

History - Today we created a timeline to show how the Suffragettes protested and fought for gender equality over many decades.

RE - Today we created a comic strip to show the story of Moses, and then we explored a range artistic representations that showed Moses in different ways.

As a prize for all their hard work in the first week and a half of Year 6, the class chose to play benchball during PE. They had a great time and showed fab teamwork skills. Well done Year 6!

English - We used our computing skills to research the life of Ernest Shackleton, ready to write our biographies about him tomorrow!

Science - In this lesson, we built many different circuits, using a range of electrical components. After we successfully built each one, we drew them in our books, using the symbols we learnt last week.

Maths - Today we completed our end of topic test on Place Value. I’m so proud of Year 6 - they’ve all made a brilliant start, and have worked incredibly hard. A big well done to these children, who scored an outstanding 20/20!

English - Today we explored the features of a biography, looking at both good and bad examples. With our partners, we picked them apart, discovering what makes an exceptional biography, ready to write our own, about Shackleton, next week!

Science - Today we explored the symbols for electrical components used in simple circuits. We then found their definitions to expand our learning further.

English - We explored the first few pages of Shackleton’s Journey, using our note taking skills to discover the most important parts of his life. We used these facts to create our own timeline!
