Keep up to date with all the news happening in school at the moment.
There was a huge turn out at after school football this week from both the boys and girls of St Joseph's. On Monday night there were 23 girls attending the club and Wednesday evening saw 39 boys at the session. The weather has been really kind to us since we returned from the holidays so with any luck the numbers will continue to be high as the season progresses.
This term the Junior teachers are receiving a block of Sports Hall Athletics Training delivered by John Irish who is local PE specialist. The training will hopefully help to build teaching confidence in the subject area and is a great use of the Sports Premium Funding we receive from the Government.
Today, a team of 20 children from St Joseph's travelled all the way to Brymore Academy in Cannington to compete in this years Sedgemoor Schools Area Sports! With around 200 children congregating on the Brymore sports fields, the standard of competition was immense! Each of the children had to compete in a 400m, a 75m sprint, a standing long jump and a vortex howler throw against nine other children from the other schools taking parts. If you finished in the top four you were rewarded with a certificate and earned points for your school! Every single child from St Joseph's finished in a top four position in at least one of their events and many of the team had multiple top four finishes! The competition ended with relays and a presentation in a nearby marquee. With a 6th place finish, the children of St Joseph's should be very proud of themselves. Many of the schools competing today are at least double the size of our tiny school and well over half of the St Joseph's team were from Year 4 or 5 and will be eligible to race again next year! A great all round performance from everyone and I look forward to next year's competition.
Despite needing to postpone the morning flat races and relay races due to rain and a greasy running track, we were fortunate enough to make it out onto the field after lunch for the afternoon activities. The children had great fun exerting themselves and burning off lots of that stored up energy from a morning spent in the classrooms!
A magnificent performance today from our Cricket team saw them place 3rd in the County Cricket Finals held at Wembdon Cricket Club in Bridgwater. Representing the Sedgemoor Area, this team of 8 batted, bowled and fielded their way to a County bronze medal! In total, the team played 5 games against the best representatives from Somerset and North Somerset! They finished the day with three wins and two very narrow loses in what turned out to be a very close competition.
There were many highlights and some of the cricket on display was just brilliant! However, there was a magical incident that caught my eye in our penultimate game which highlights the empathetic nature and true spirit we look to endorse here at St Joseph's. An opposition player had been hit and hurt by the ball while batting and was 'out' and quite clearly distressed and in discomfort. The whole St Joseph's team were generally concerned and raced over to check that he was alright and proceeded to ask the umpire to disregard the wicket and replay the ball again.....that moment made me the proudest teacher in Somerset! The team deserved that bronze medal, but in my eyes they will always be winners, especially if they maintain such a positive approach to sport.
Today 70 children from Key Stage 1 had great fun at a Sports Festival at St Joseph's School in Bridgwater. The children were grouped into teams, mixing with other children from the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust. They participated in a carousel of fun sporting activities!
What a glorious way to spend a Thursday afternoon! Today 20 boys and girls from Year 3 and Year 4 travelled down the road to 'The Avenue Tennis Club' to take part in a local area tennis tournament.
The children have been attending Mr Fisher's after school club for the last 3 or 4 weeks and this was an ideal opportunity to put into practice all that they had leant as they competed against other schools in the Sedgemoor area.
The children had a brilliant time in extremely hot conditions and the standard of tennis being played seemed to get better and better with every game!
Each team was made up of four children (two boys/two girls) and everyone played a series of matches against children from other schools. Points were added up and out of the two pools of schools, the top two teams contested the final. I'm pleased to say that one of the St Joseph's teams were in the final and won 3-1 against some strong opposition from neighboring St Andrew's.
Overall this was a fantastic experience for all the children and it was a great opportunity to experience tennis in a club environment. The organisation of the event by Head Coach Tim Seymour was just great and it was very kind of him to deliver ice creams to all the children participating half way through the afternoon!
Like I said at the start of this article, it was a glorious way to spend a Thursday afternoon!
Today a team of 8 St Joseph boys travelled to Wembdon Cricket Club in Bridgwater to compete in the 2023 area competition. The boys played some remarkable cricket throughout the afternoon with some superb batting, bowling and fielding on display! There was a real buzz of excitement in every game and the team spirit and effort was just great to watch. This group of children were just amazing at supporting and encouraging each other, especially when mistakes were made. They were respectful of the other teams they were playing, cheering and shaking hands at the ends of games even when they had lost! It was a pleasure to spend time umpiring and scoring such a wonderful group of boys. We finished the competition with three wins and two very narrow loses which is just magnificent!
We had a great time on Friday 5th May 2023 celebrating the coronation as a school community. We have created a special page in the "class pages" section of the website where you can find images from the day!
GOOD LUCK to the 11 children from St Joseph's who have been selected to represent the Area of Sedgemoor in the County Cross Country Finals being held in Yeovil on Wednesday 3rd May. It's a great opportunity to races against some of the best runners in the County and we look forward to hearing about how you all get on.
