• 1st Holy Communion

  Today (8th May) saw Andre and Ellie from year three have their first Holy Communion at Our Lady and The English Martyrs church. It was lovely to see you looking so smart and enjoying your special day with your family and friends. 

• Teachers benefit from dance support

  The teachers at St Joseph's are currently benefiting from support in the delivery of curriculum dance. With the school using some of the Sports Premium Funding to employ a dance specialist to work alongside the teachers, everyone's a winner! The children receive high quality dance tuition and the teachers are supported in their delivery of this subject area. The dance ideas are current and inspiring and the children (and teachers) seem fully engaged in the process.

  

• Invitation to King Alfred E-Safety Parents Information Evening

  On Tuesday 10th May there will be a presentation at King Alfred School by the Avon and Somerset Police on how to keep your child safe online. This important event will be held between 6pm and 8pm, with the presentation only lasting from 6pm until 7pm.
  Parents will be given tips and hints to keep their children safe in todays digital world

• Basketball and Gymnastic team compete in County School Games

  On Friday 15th April, a team of 16 children from St Joseph's travelled to Millfield in Street to represent the Sedgemoor area (and the school) in the County Spring Games Finals. Five Gymnasts from Key Stage 1 and five from Key Stage 2 took to the floor and the spring board in an effort to be crowned County Champions! The teams competed with passion and determination and performed extremely well, especially as many of the children were a year under age. Although we did not manage to place as a team, one of the children did win an individual bronze medal, which is an achievement in itself considering the level of competition. A huge well done to all of you. A truly brilliant effort!
  
  In a separate part of the school, six of our very talented boys in Year 6 were competing in the basketball competition, once again looking to be crowned County champions! The boys played some of the best basketball I have seen in a very long time and despite loosing the first couple of games, they regrouped and rather than feeling sorry for themselves, galvanised into action, winning the next two games and drawing the following two......it was just brilliant to watch! They eventually ended the competition in 4th place, sadly just outside the medals but holding their heads high after a truly spirited performance!

• Magnificent three run at County Cross Country Finals

  A lovely sunny evening saw three children from St Joseph's selected to represent the Sedgemoor area in the prestigious County Primary Schools Cross Country Finals held this year in Yeovil. I had the great pleasure to go along to watch Lillie, Harriet and Fletcher all compete in the Year 3/4 separate boys and girls races. All three children were fantastic, running on a hard, fast course with real grit and determination. The level of competition in this event is extremely strong, with many of the athletes already training at local clubs. All three St Joseph's children are competing a year under age, so the future looks really bright for next years competition! Great effort guys!

• Swimming Gala Success

  A team of 20 children travelled to our local swimming pool this afternoon to compete in the area swimming gala. A fantastic team effort saw the team finish in 2nd place out of five schools (many of which are far larger than ours). The team spirit and camaraderie was second to none, not to mention the quality of swimming! A huge well done to everyone - I look forward to seeing a few of you in future Olympics!!

• Pupil and Parent Questionnaire Results

  Pupil questionnaires: We recently carried out a survey of all pupils asking them different questions about their learning, the results of which are summarised below. I’m sure you will agree that they show a very positive response from the children to what is happening in class.

  Parent questionnaire: This was carried out in December 2015 and 40% of parents responded. Some of the main findings were that:
  
  95% of parents agreed their child is happy in school
  93% of parents agreed their child is safe in school
  
  96% of parents agreed their child makes good progress
  95% of parents thought their child was well looked after
  
  98% of parents thought their child was well taught
  89% of parents believe that the school ensure pupils are well behaved
  
  Areas for improvement: Some parents would like to see greater visibility of senior leaders and governors and to have more information about their child’s progress.
  
  Whilst we are pleased with these results, we are working hard to ensure we make further improvements in the areas that parents have identified as priorities. Thank you to those who took part.

• Key Stage 1 and 2 Gymnasts make County Finals

  A huge well done to the 16 children who competed for St Joseph's in a recent area gymnastics competition. Despite exceptionally high competition from across the area, I'm pleased to report that our four teams were magnificent! We were particularly successful in the Year 3-4 competition where we were crowned area winners and in the Year 1-2 competition we finished runners up. This means that two of our teams will now represent both the school and area in the County event on the 15th April. Great effort! 

• Tag Rugby Triumph!

  A huge well done to our Tag Rugby Team who finished third in the recent area competition. The team, that was made up of girls and boys from Year 6 played some fantastic rugby displaying speed, agility and wonderful teamwork. Despite winning 50% of their games, the team were very unfortunate not to progress to the prestigious County finals. Well done to all of you, Mr Fisher and the school are extremely proud of you all! 

• Basketball Team make County Finals

  A huge well done to the Basketball team who progressed through to the School Games County Finals yesterday afternoon. The team, comprised of six Year 6 boys competed against teams from BCA, Eastover, North Petherton, Somerset Bridge and Brent Knoll (many of which are twice the size of our school). They played some fantastic basketball, eventually finishing runners up in the competition and earning a spot in the County finals! Well done boys, Mr Fisher and the school are very proud of you.
